PCA Arizona is one of 50 state chapters of Prevent Child Abuse America (preventchildabuse.org).  A statewide organization based in Prescott Valley, PCA Arizona promotes innovative, evidence-based prevention strategies for parents of young children at risk for maltreatment.  PCA Arizona also provides state-of-the-art trainings for home visitors, health care providers, law enforcement and Child Protective Services personnel to increase their capacity to protect children from maltreatment.

A team of local child welfare stakeholders consisting of court personnel, foster parents, attorneys, parent aides, therapists, early intervention specialists, family support and public health meet monthly to increase shared knowledge of the unique needs of maltreated infants and toddlers, and to coordinate services for them and their parents aimed at improving outcomes.

Never Shake a Baby Arizona

Never Shake a baby is a statewide initiative to educate all parents of newborns about coping with crying and the dangers of shaking. In 2012-2013 almost 40,000 new parents will be educated by OB nurses in participating hospitals.

In Yavapai, Verde Valley Medical Center is implementing Never Shake a Baby through funding from the Yavapai Regional Partnership of First Things First.

Never Shake a Baby website site provides practical advice for parents, caregivers as well as data and medical information on traumatic brain injury for community professionals. Monthly data reports show the number of new parents educated in each participating hospital.

AGENCY SELF DESCRIPTION:

Smart Support is a unique program that partners early childhood mental health consultants with child care providers to promote the social and emotional development of all children in care, and help providers respond to children with behavioral challenges. Smart Support consultants work with you to design an individualized plan to meet your program's needs for children ages birth to five. Services may include training, consultation, implementation of classroom strategies and resources or referrals for specific children or situations. Your plan may be short- or long-term, depending on need.

AGENCY SELF-DESCRIPTION:

Yavapai Family Advocacy Center seeks to minimize further trauma to victims of family violence by coordinating law enforcement, Child Protective Services, prosecution, and victim support services. Short-term counseling is provided for clients. Staff identify and assist in locating resources for victims. Support groups for survivors are held weekly. Childcare is provided. A 5-week Parent Support Group is available to parents whose children have been abused.
